How many patent applications did Poland file with the EPO in 2025?

In 2025, Polish entities filed 621 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO). That places Poland twelfth in the European Union and represents just 0.9% of all filings from EU-27 member states.

That figure also marks a 10.3% drop from the previous year, when Poland filed 692 applications. The downward trend is all the more surprising given the growing interest businesses are showing in intellectual property protection, as the number of trademark filings makes clear.

For comparison, Finland – a country of just 5.6 million people – filed 3,457 inventions that same year, more than five times as many as Poland with its 38 million. Countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Belgium also consistently outpace Poland in European patent filings.

The 621 applications include both direct EP filings and PCT applications entering the European phase (the PCT is the international Patent Cooperation Treaty). Each of these filings is an important step in protecting the innovations of Polish companies across Europe.

Experts point out that the low number of filings does not stem from a lack of innovation among Polish businesses, but rather from an underdeveloped habit of using the European patent protection system and limited awareness of the options that international filing offers.
